Cure8 research brief
Why This Matters
Patients and clinicians choosing among advanced therapies for ulcerative colitis may consider infection-related hospitalization risk as one factor; this study suggests lower risk with ustekinumab versus TNF antagonists in a Japanese real-world cohort.
Who Should Pay Attention
Adult patients with ulcerative colitis considering or receiving biologics or JAK inhibitors; clinicians managing therapy choices and infection risk; researchers studying safety of advanced IBD therapies.
Study Snapshot
What To Know
This retrospective cohort used a Japanese hospital claims database to compare hospitalized infection rates among patients starting TNF antagonists, ustekinumab, tofacitinib, or vedolizumab between 2008 and 2022.
After adjustment, ustekinumab had a significantly lower hazard of infection-related hospitalization versus TNF antagonists; tofacitinib and vedolizumab showed no statistically significant difference from TNF antagonists.
The study classified hospitalized infections by organ system and found the distribution of infection types (most commonly respiratory) was similar across treatment groups. The analysis describes incidence rates per 1,000 person-years and reports adjusted hazard ratios using Cox models.
This abstract reports real-world, observational findings from Japanese administrative data; it does not report randomized comparisons or mechanistic explanations.
Keep In Mind
Observational claims data can show associations but are subject to residual confounding and coding limitations. The report is an abstract-level summary from a published journal article; details such as dosing, prior biologic exposure, comorbidities, and infection severity may affect interpretation and are important to review in the full paper.
