What To Know

This article reports a preclinical laboratory and animal study testing a probiotic strain (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum J3) isolated from Arctic fox intestines.

In cell culture the strain showed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and in mice given dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) to induce colitis, oral J3 reduced weight loss, lowered clinical disease scores, improved colon histology, decreased pro-inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, MPO, PGE2, COX-2 mRNA), and increased anti-inflammatory or barrier-related markers (IL-10, tight-junction protein mRNA, MUC2 mRNA).

The study also reports shifts in the gut microbiota and increased short-chain fatty acid levels in a subset of animals. The findings are limited to in vitro and mouse-model data and do not indicate safety or efficacy in humans.
