This study used a retrospective, propensity-matched U.S. database to compare outcomes for patients with IBD prescribed tirzepatide versus GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs).

Over a median follow-up of about 18 months, tirzepatide was associated with a lower risk of intravenous steroid use and a lower risk on a composite IBD outcome (IV steroids or intestinal surgery), while risks of hospitalization, ED visits, intestinal surgery, and adverse outcomes were similar between groups.

The analysis included 3,042 matched patients per group and reported adjusted hazard ratios for IV steroid use (aHR 0.81) and the composite outcome (aHR 0.86). The authors note similar findings in a subgroup with ulcerative colitis.

Because this is a retrospective observational study using administrative/clinical data, the results show association not causation and may be affected by unmeasured confounding.
