The authors report that ADF worsened colitis outcomes in mice: greater weight loss, lower survival, impaired colonic mucus layer integrity, reduced certain innate immune cells in bone marrow and lymphocytes in spleen, and evidence of anemia.

The paper concludes that strict ADF suppressed tissue repair and systemic immune function and promoted anemia in this acute DSS-colitis model. The authors advise caution about applying intermittent fasting during active IBD. This is preclinical (mouse) research and does not directly prove the same effects occur in people with IBD.

It does, however, raise biologically plausible concerns that severe calorie-restriction regimens might be harmful during active intestinal injury.
