Why This Matters

A dietary multi-mineral supplement is being tested in a Phase 2 trial to see if it can improve symptoms, influence inflammation biomarkers, and help induce or maintain remission in people with ulcerative colitis.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adults with mild ulcerative colitis or UC in remission, GI clinicians, and researchers interested in dietary/supplement interventions, biomarkers, and trial-based outcomes.

What To Know

The study (NCT03869905) is active but not recruiting and plans to enroll about 40 adults at the University of Michigan. Participants take 4 capsules daily (about 800 mg calcium/day) for 180 days in the Aquamin® arm; there is a crossover arm with placebo for the first 90 days then Aquamin® for the last 90 days.

Primary outcomes include patient-reported IBDQ quality-of-life score, endoscopic/clinical disease activity (Mayo/UCDAI), tissue IL-8 cytokine levels, serum CRP, and fecal calprotectin measured through day 180.

How this may affect people with IBD: This trial is testing a dietary supplement approach rather than a prescription drug; outcomes include both symptom scores and objective inflammatory biomarkers and endoscopy.

Keep In Mind

This is a registered Phase 2 interventional trial (active, not recruiting) with planned enrollment of ~40 participants at a single U.S. site. As a trial record, it describes planned interventions and outcomes but does not report results.

The supplement contains high calcium and excludes participants with kidney disease or hypercalcemia; pregnancy testing and medication restrictions are part of eligibility.
