Why This Matters

Postoperative recurrence in Crohn's disease is common and often first detected on endoscopy. If probiotics reduced endoscopic recurrence, it could offer a low-risk, non-pharmacologic strategy to help prevent disease return after surgery.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adults with Crohn's disease undergoing ileo-colic resection, surgeons and gastroenterologists managing postoperative prevention, clinical researchers studying microbiome-based interventions, and patients interested in probiotic approaches.

What To Know

This is a registered, completed randomized double-blind multicentre trial testing whether daily oral probiotic capsules (freeze-dried probiotic, 6 capsules/day providing 1×10^10 CFU per capsule) for 12 months reduce endoscopic recurrence in adults after ileo-colic resection for Crohn's disease.

The study enrolled adults (18–60) who had complete resection of macroscopic ileo-colonic lesions and began probiotic intake within 21 days after surgery; key exclusions included recent resections, large cumulative small-bowel resections (>1 m), ileostomy, significant other intestinal disease, prolonged postoperative antibiotics, or use of certain unpermitted medications postoperatively.

Endoscopic inspection at 12 months was the primary clinical endpoint timing described in the registry.

Keep In Mind

This entry is a clinicaltrials.gov trial record (completed). The registry provides study design, eligibility, intervention details, and planned endpoints but does not in itself report results or outcomes. The specific probiotic strain(s) are not named in the registry text provided here. Interpret trial effects only from published results or peer-reviewed reports of this study.
