What To Know

This study used a DSS-induced rat model of ulcerative colitis to test electroacupuncture (EA). The authors report that EA reduced disease activity index scores, protected colon length, lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β), and increased anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-10).

They assessed autophagy markers (ATG5, ATG12, LC3, p62) and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway activity, and performed 16S rRNA sequencing of the gut microbiota plus fecal microbiota transplantation to explore causality.

EA-treated rats showed histologic improvement, changes in autophagy-related proteins consistent with enhanced autophagy, suppression of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling, increased microbiota diversity, and FMT experiments that the authors interpret as linking microbiota changes to autophagy and inflammation.

The paper presents an animal (rat) experimental model and mechanistic molecular and microbiome data; it does not provide clinical evidence in humans.
