They report that rs174538 was associated with lower erythrocyte δ-6 desaturase index and, unexpectedly, with decreased δ-5 index and lower arachidonic acid — effects the authors largely attribute to linkage with nearby FADS1 variants.
The rs174538 genotype alone did not directly stratify clinical disease activity, but erythrocyte δ-6 desaturase index correlated with CDAI in patients with the wild-type rs174538 genotype.
