The authors performed a PRISMA-ScR scoping review of human studies (PubMed through April 2026 plus citation tracing) and synthesized results in a pesticide-class × outcome matrix. Twenty-eight papers were retained and 20 human studies entered the detailed synthesis.
Evidence coverage was incomplete (20 of 60 matrix cells populated), and risk-of-bias across cohorts was commonly moderate, with several studies showing elevated bias. The most consistent within-scope finding reported was higher IBD risk associated with organochlorine exposure across three cohorts.
Other pesticide–outcome cells (for example glyphosate × IBD and neonicotinoids × GI outcomes) had no human studies identified, and the authors highlight biomarker-anchored prospective cohorts as a priority to fill these gaps.
