The investigators used metabolomics and 16S rRNA sequencing and linked treatment effects to changes in the PKC signaling pathway, shifts in gut microbiota (including a disrupted lauric acid–Shigella correlation), and correction of several serum metabolites.
The study compared multiple doses and a mesalazine control and found the high-dose herbal formulation had the strongest effect on histology, body weight recovery, the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, and metabolite profiles.
