Why This Matters

Many people with Crohn's disease remain on oral aminosalicylates despite uncertainty about their benefit in CD. This trial directly tested whether stopping 5-ASA is acceptably safe compared with continuing it for maintaining remission over 24 months.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adults with Crohn's disease on 5-ASA therapy; gastroenterologists and IBD clinicians; researchers studying medication de-escalation in IBD.

What To Know

This interventional, open-label study randomized adults with Crohn's disease in clinical remission who had been taking any oral 5-ASA for at least 6 months to either continue the same 5-ASA regimen or discontinue it. The primary registered outcome was CD-related complications at 2 years (surgery, hospitalization, or other complication).

Eligibility excluded active perianal or fistulizing disease, recent major bowel surgery, recent steroid use, and other conditions that could interfere with participation.

Keep In Mind

This record is a trial registry entry (Phase 4, completed) and provides design and eligibility details but does not include outcome results in the provided text. Interpret any clinical implications only after reviewing peer-reviewed trial results or guideline updates.
