Why This Matters

A rare liver cancer (fibrolamellar HCC) was found in a young person with newly diagnosed Crohn’s disease, expanding prior reports that linked FLC mainly to ulcerative colitis. Patients and clinicians should be aware that rare liver tumors can occur in IBD.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adult patients with IBD, gastroenterologists/hepatologists, and researchers interested in IBD-associated liver complications

What To Know

A large liver mass was discovered incidentally during evaluation of GI symptoms. Surgical resection and later additional lymphadenectomy were performed; pathology confirmed fibrolamellar HCC. The patient experienced recurrence and subsequently received systemic therapy with lenvatinib and entered remission.

The report emphasizes typical clinical, radiographic, histopathologic, and molecular features of FLC and notes that relapse after curative resection is common.

Keep In Mind

This is a single-case abstract; it does not prove causation or change clinical practice. Relapse after resection is common for FLC, and the report notes use of surgery and systemic therapy (lenvatinib).
