Why This Matters

A blood biomarker that reliably indicates mucosal healing could reduce reliance on colonoscopy, help monitor disease activity more frequently, and better guide treatment decisions in UC.

Who Should Pay Attention

Clinicians who manage UC, researchers studying IBD biomarkers, and adults with ulcerative colitis interested in noninvasive monitoring

What To Know

Researchers retrospectively analyzed 182 UC patients who had blood and stool tests within 14 days of colonoscopy. SAA correlated strongly with other inflammatory markers (LRG and CRP) and with endoscopic disease severity scores.

The authors report cutoffs for SAA that identified active endoscopic inflammation (MES ≥2) and that distinguished complete endoscopic remission (MES 0) from mild residual inflammation (MES 1).

How this might be used: If validated prospectively, SAA could become another noninvasive blood test to help judge mucosal healing and guide the need for endoscopy or treatment adjustments. Current results come from a single retrospective cohort.

Keep In Mind

This report is a retrospective single-center analysis (182 patients) using colonoscopy as the reference standard; prospective validation in independent cohorts is needed before SAA could be adopted in routine practice. The structured content is based on the article abstract.
