Why This Matters

The study aims to clarify differences in visceral sensitivity and collect multiple biological samples that could help explain why some people with IBD have IBS-like symptoms. Findings could inform better symptom-targeted treatments in the future.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adults with IBS, people with active or remitted Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (with or without IBS symptoms), clinicians who manage IBD/IBS, and researchers studying gut sensitivity, gut–brain interactions, or biomarkers.

What To Know

The study collects rectal and colon biopsies, blood, nasal mucosa samples, stool, questionnaires, colon transit measurements, and brain MRI scans. The main measurable outcome is visceral sensitivity measured by a rectal barostat performed at the time of investigation.

If you consider participating: eligibility is 18–65 years and requires stopping medications that affect GI motility or perception at least 24 hours before study procedures. The study is based at University Hospitals Leuven (Belgium) and is listed as recruiting on ClinicalTrials.gov.

No results are reported in this record; this entry describes the study design and planned measurements.

Keep In Mind

This is a registered interventional trial record describing planned measurements and sample collection; no study results or outcomes are reported here. Participation requires stopping certain medications briefly and meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria. The ClinicalTrials.gov entry should be consulted for updated recruitment status and contact details.
