What To Know

The authors report that berberine reduced epithelial cell death and markers of GSDME-mediated pyroptosis in cultured epithelial cells and lowered colonic GSDME cleavage, improved barrier markers (Tjp1, Muc2), and reduced weight loss, diarrhea, colon shortening, and histopathology in infected mice, without lowering bacterial load in this experiment.

These results come from cellular assays and an experimental infectious-colitis mouse model, not human trials. The paper suggests a possible mechanism (modulation of GSDME and reduced pyroptosis) and positions berberine as a candidate for further study in infection-associated colitis.
