What To Know

This prospective clinical study tested two neutrophil activation markers (Neutrophil Reactivity Intensity, Neut-RI; and Neutrophil Granularity Intensity, Neut-GI) measured on a Sysmex XN-9000 analyzer in blood from 68 patients with a suspected UC flare and 71 healthy controls. Neut-RI and Neut-GI were higher in UC patients than controls.

Neut-RI showed a moderate correlation with Mayo and SCCAI clinical scores and discriminated patients with proctitis from those with more extensive disease. The authors report that Neut-RI outperformed fecal calprotectin and CRP in correlating with clinical activity in this cohort.

The work is presented as a promising, low-cost, non-invasive biomarker for UC disease activity but is reported from a single prospective study and uses a specific hematology platform (Sysmex XN-9000).
