The work is an experimental (DSS-induced colitis) study testing a specific combination: the probiotic strain Enterococcus faecium SF68® plus butyrate and folate.
In a preventive regimen the mixture reduced a pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF), increased the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, lowered a circulation marker linked to barrier leak (LBP), and increased expression of tight-junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin). The combined formulation performed better than SF68 alone on several barrier and metabolic measures.
In a curative protocol given during established inflammation the benefits were more limited but some improvements in disease activity index and selected barrier/inflammatory markers were still observed.
The combination also uniquely increased expression of the SCFA transporter MCT4 and restored citrate synthase activity, a marker of epithelial mitochondrial function. This is a preclinical mechanistic study, not a clinical trial.
It suggests the combined formulation may have broader biological effects than the probiotic alone and could be explored further as an adjunctive strategy, but it does not provide evidence about safety or efficacy in people with IBD.
