The authors used flow cytometry on peripheral blood to profile lymphocyte populations in a small cohort (13 patients with AS+CD, 16 CD, 13 AS, and 26 healthy controls).
They report higher total regulatory T-cell levels and an increased frequency of CD73+ regulatory T cells within the effector-memory compartment in the AS+CD group compared with the other groups. Some effector-memory cytotoxic and helper T-cell populations were lower in AS+CD than in CD alone.
Correlations were reported between Tfh subsets and memory B-cell subsets and with inflammatory markers and disease activity scores. The study is a pilot with modest sample sizes and reports associations in peripheral blood; it does not establish causality or clinical diagnostic tests.
