Why This Matters

Anemia is common in IBD and hard to classify accurately; better blood markers can guide appropriate iron treatment and avoid delays. This study evaluates a novel marker (sHjv) alongside established tests.

Who Should Pay Attention

Clinicians managing anemia in IBD, researchers studying biomarkers for iron disorders in chronic inflammation, and adult IBD patients concerned about anemia evaluation.

What To Know

Researchers measured standard iron markers (transferrin saturation, soluble transferrin receptor [sTFR], sTFR index) and hepcidin, plus serum hemojuvelin (sHjv), in 152 consecutive IBD patients. The sTFR and especially the sTFR index performed well for identifying true iron deficiency anemia.

By contrast, sHjv did not show useful diagnostic performance for IDA, although it correlated negatively with hepcidin.

Takeaway If you or your clinician are looking for blood tests to help tell iron deficiency from inflammation-driven anemia in IBD, this study supports the value of sTFR and the sTFR index; it does not support adding sHjv as a diagnostic marker based on the presented data.
