What To Know
The study compared 560 physician-recorded SpA cases to matched controls and used prescription and medical-record data to define exposures. Primary exposure was systemic antibiotics in the first year of life; investigators also looked at antibiotic class and early upper respiratory infections.
The reported associations were statistically adjusted and a dose-response test was performed. The finding was strongest for psoriatic arthritis in subgroup analysis and for broad-spectrum penicillins. Early upper respiratory tract infection was also independently associated with SpA; delivery mode and nonbacterial systemic antimicrobials were not associated.
This is an observational, register-based study: it identifies associations but cannot prove antibiotics cause SpA. It does, however, add to literature suggesting early-life microbiome influences immune-mediated disease risk.
