What To Know

This study measured serum REG3α (a Paneth cell–derived protein) across multiple cohorts, including a pre-diagnostic cohort, and found that higher levels were linked to future complicated disease and to progression during established CD.

The association remained after accounting for CRP and endoscopic activity and was present even in patients with mild or inactive disease. The authors also analyzed tissue RNA and single-cell data suggesting shifts in Paneth cell populations and increased REG3α-expressing cells as a possible biological connection between REG3α levels and complicated CD.

These findings suggest REG3α could become a noninvasive prognostic biomarker for CD, but further validation and clinical implementation studies are needed.
