What To Know

This study used plasma proteomics from a large UK Biobank resource plus machine learning to find proteins linked to both IBD and later osteoporosis risk, and prioritized eight candidate circulating proteins (PLAUR, TNFRSF10A, SPINK1, HLA_E, CHGA, SPP1, TNFRSF10B, IGFBP2).

The authors also performed exploratory single-cell expression checks for several candidate genes in intestinal cell types to provide biological context. The findings are presented as candidate biomarkers and potential mechanistic links between IBD and bone loss; this is a discovery/profiling study rather than a clinical test or treatment trial.

These proteins may help guide future validation work, but they are not validated diagnostic or prognostic tests yet. If you have IBD and are concerned about bone health, current clinical practice remains focused on established risk assessment (history, DXA scans, calcium/vitamin D, addressing steroid exposure).
