What To Know

This mouse study tested a probiotic strain (Lacticaseibacillus paracasei CD12-1) derived from fermented yak milk for prevention of colitis caused by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS).

The authors report that CD12-1—especially at a low dose—reduced colon damage, improved markers of barrier integrity (ZO-1, Occludin), lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL‑1β, IL‑6, TNF‑α), increased IL‑10, raised acetate and butyrate levels, and altered gut microbiota composition.

The findings are from a controlled animal model (DSS-induced colitis in mice), not humans. While results suggest mechanisms (barrier protection, anti-inflammatory effects, shifts in short‑chain fatty acids and microbial taxa), they do not demonstrate safety or efficacy in people with ulcerative colitis or IBD.
