Why This Matters

A blood biomarker that tracks both symptoms and endoscopic inflammation could help with noninvasive monitoring of ulcerative colitis activity and reduce reliance on invasive procedures if validated.

Who Should Pay Attention

Clinicians and researchers studying UC biomarkers; adult patients interested in advances in noninvasive disease monitoring.

What To Know

This was a prospective, single-center case–control study comparing 105 patients with UC to 68 healthy controls. Serum sENG was measured by ELISA and showed higher median values in UC versus controls, and moderate-to-strong correlations with partial Mayo clinical scores and Mayo endoscopic subscores.

The authors also report correlations between sENG and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-17A). The paper presents diagnostic-performance metrics (AUCs) and reports that higher sENG remained independently associated with clinically active disease after multivariable adjustment.

The authors note that external validation and direct comparison with established biomarkers are needed before clinical use.

Keep In Mind

The source is a single-center clinical study reported in a journal abstract; findings require external validation and head-to-head comparison with established biomarkers before changing practice.
