What To Know

This study used an estimated dietary sodium measure derived from an equation applied to the cohort and diagnostic codes to identify IL-17–mediated diseases.

The main finding was a small adjusted increase in the odds of having any IL-17–mediated disease per 1 g higher estimated sodium, driven mainly by psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and rheumatoid arthritis. For IBD specifically, the association reported was a slightly lower odds (adjusted odds ratio 0.84).

These results are observational and cross-sectional: they describe associations at one point in time and cannot prove that sodium causes changes in disease risk. Measurement of sodium was estimated rather than directly measured dietary intake, and diagnoses came from coded records.

The authors suggest further work (for example randomized dietary trials) to test whether reducing salt intake affects IL-17–mediated diseases.
