Why This Matters

A multimodal, simpler activity score could improve practical disease monitoring when full ileocolonoscopy isn’t possible and help standardize treat-to-target practice across centers.

Who Should Pay Attention

Clinicians managing Crohn’s disease, researchers working on disease activity measures or imaging, and centers that perform IBD monitoring where incomplete colonoscopies are common.

What To Know

Researchers developed MAS-CD from four scored parameters (ulcer size, ulcerated surface, affected surface, stenosis severity) and incorporated CT enterography, optional MRE, or intestinal ultrasound when ileocolonoscopy was incomplete.

In multicenter testing the score showed substantial interobserver agreement and correlated strongly with SES-CD and modestly with CRP, fecal calprotectin, albumin, and clinical indices.

In the validation cohort MAS-CD differentiated remission from active disease and small-bowel versus colonic-predominant disease, and the authors report better prediction of treatment response than SES-CD in their sample.

How this was done This is a multicenter development and prospective validation study with an initial inter-rater reproducibility cohort (n=157) and an independent validation cohort (n=91). Correlations with endoscopic scores, clinical indices, and biomarkers were evaluated; imaging modalities were used to fill gaps from incomplete colonoscopies.

Keep In Mind

This record is a posted research abstract (Research Square) and the structured content depth is abstract; findings have not completed full peer-reviewed publication here. Reported diagnostic performance and predictive claims are from the authors’ validation cohorts and should be confirmed in wider, independent studies before changing practice.
