Why This Matters

Obese patients with FibroScan-detected steatosis in this cohort had a high frequency of colitis and some cases of IBD, dysplasia, and cancer, which could affect screening and symptom evaluation decisions.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adult patients with obesity and hepatic steatosis; gastroenterologists and hepatologists; researchers on NAFLD–gut disease links

What To Know

This study examined 130 obese adults with steatosis identified by FibroScan/CAP at a single center who all underwent lower GI endoscopy with biopsy. About 40% had colitis on evaluation; histology identified nonspecific colitis (24.6%), ulcerative colitis (3.8%), and Crohn’s disease (2.3%), plus low- and high-grade dysplasia and a small number of cancers.

The report suggests obese patients with steatosis may carry a notable burden of colonic inflammation and premalignant/malignant lesions, but it is a single cross-sectional cohort without a nonsteatotic control group matched for other risk factors. This limits conclusions about whether steatosis independently increases colonic disease risk.

Keep In Mind

Cross-sectional, single-center study without matched nonsteatotic control; results show association in this cohort but cannot prove causation or generalize broadly.
