Researchers report that the yeast Debaryomyces hansenii — a food-associated fungus the authors found enriched in intestinal ulcers from Crohn disease patients — is detected by innate immune cells through the Dectin-1–Card9 signaling pathway.

In lab experiments using bone marrow–derived macrophages and dendritic cells, blocking or deleting Dectin-1 reduced phagocytosis and, importantly, decreased production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (Tnf).
