What To Know
This is a hospital-based interventional study testing whether a 12-week supervised physical activity program improves cardiorespiratory fitness in children and adolescents (8–17 years) with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
The trial has three parts: observational cross-sectional and longitudinal assessments, a randomized controlled trial comparing the exercise program to usual care with cardiorespiratory fitness (20-meter shuttle run) as the primary outcome, and a 6–12 month follow-up to assess sustainability.
The study will use objective activity measurement (accelerometers), the ALPHA fitness battery, and will track inflammatory markers (fecal calprotectin, CRP), disease activity scores (PCDAI/PUCAI), musculoskeletal health, fatigue, cognition, nutritional status, and quality-of-life. A subsample will have selected biological markers analyzed.
