What To Know

This report analyzed 157 UC patients and 395 controls, converting food-frequency responses into ordinal scores and grouping participants by combined levels of risk-promoting versus protective foods. Strong positive associations were reported for fast food and carbonated soft drinks; dairy intake showed an inverse association.

In combined-profile analyses, participants with low consumption of risk-promoting foods had substantially lower odds of UC regardless of protective-food intake. The study is observational and case–control in design, so it can show associations but cannot prove that particular foods cause or prevent UC.

The authors note prospective studies are needed to confirm these relationships.
