This study used German insurance claims data to emulate trials comparing vaccine effectiveness (VE) of herpes zoster and seasonal influenza vaccines between people with autoimmune/immune-mediated diseases (AID: multiple sclerosis, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic inflammatory rheumatic disorders) and those without AID.
Across the herpes zoster analysis (≈169,000 vaccinated and matched controls, ~11,000 AID people per group) and four influenza seasons (2015/16–2018/19; hundreds of thousands to >1.7 million people per season, tens of thousands with AID), the authors found no consistent or meaningful differences in VE between AID and non-AID groups after matching and adjustment.
