Why This Matters

This trial explores whether delivering sodium propionate directly to the colon can alter the gut microbiome and immune markers in people with Crohn’s disease and whether it offers similar or added benefits compared with butyrate — a better‑studied short‑chain fatty acid.

Who Should Pay Attention

Adults with Crohn’s disease in remission or mild activity; gastroenterologists and IBD researchers interested in microbiome and SCFA‑based interventions.

What To Know

The study enrolls about 50 adults with Crohn’s disease and uses a 45‑day treatment period per arm (three capsules daily), a washout, then crossover so each person receives both propionate and butyrate.

Primary outcomes center on shotgun metagenomic analysis of stool to measure microbiota composition and metabolic pathways; blood cytokines and patient‑reported IBDQ scores are secondary/exploratory measures.

The propionate formulation is microencapsulated to target colonic release and is being studied because propionate is a short‑chain fatty acid with potential immunomodulatory and microbiota‑modifying effects that are less well studied than butyrate.

Keep In Mind

Registry entry describes a small, randomized, double‑blind crossover pilot study focused on microbiome sequencing and biomarker changes. It is not a large efficacy trial, and the registry does not contain results.
