This study randomized 54 pediatric participants to either the Crohn's Disease Exclusion Diet with partial enteral nutrition (CDED+PEN) or exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) and collected oral swabs over 52 weeks for 16S rRNA sequencing. The oral microbiome differed by disease activity at baseline and tended to normalize as inflammation improved.
The MODI decreased with treatment and remission, with larger index changes reported in the CDED group between weeks 8–24. The authors note limited sampling at 24 weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic and recommend further validation of the index in larger cohorts.
