This paper is a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing robotic-assisted versus laparoscopic ileal pouch–anal anastomosis (IPAA) for patients with ulcerative colitis who require restorative surgery.
It pooled six observational comparative studies including 946 patients (460 robotic, 486 laparoscopic) and focused on short-term surgical outcomes such as anastomotic leak, bleeding, major complications, conversion to open surgery, postoperative ileus, overall morbidity, reoperation, readmission, operative time, and length of stay.
The authors report no statistically significant differences between robotic and laparoscopic IPAA across the measured short-term outcomes. Sensitivity analyses did not change the overall conclusions.
However, the review emphasizes that the certainty of evidence is very low because all included studies were observational and heterogeneity was moderate to high for some outcomes.
