The authors developed left-right asymmetry features from axial pelvic MRI images and tested them on a cohort of 44 Crohn’s patients with 134 MRI sequences. On a proof-of-concept subset (excluding symmetrical lesions) the classifier showed strong performance (AUC > 0.85) and lesion-localization median error around 1.0–1.2 cm.
Performance dropped on broader validation and test sets (AUCs ~0.65–0.67), and the method struggled with symmetrical (horseshoe) lesions. The work is presented as a proof-of-concept emphasizing interpretability and sequence-robustness rather than a ready clinical tool.
Larger, more diverse annotated datasets and further validation would be needed before clinical deployment.
