Why This Matters

Malnutrition and impaired growth are common at diagnosis in paediatric IBD—especially Crohn’s disease—and identifying these issues early can guide nutrition and treatment planning. Most underweight children in this study improved over time, so monitoring can track recovery and guide care.

Who Should Pay Attention

Pediatric patients with IBD, parents and caregivers, paediatric gastroenterologists, nutritionists/dietitians, and researchers focused on growth and nutrition in IBD.

What To Know

The study reviewed 128 paediatric IBD patients (69 Crohn’s, 59 UC) and measured BMI z-scores and height-for-age z-scores at diagnosis and over ~29 months. At diagnosis 23% were underweight and 7% had growth failure; underweight was more frequent in Crohn’s than UC.

Nutritional status improved for most underweight patients by follow up, and baseline underweight was not independently linked to higher relapse risk. Clinicians and families should note the authors’ recommendation to assess nutrition and linear growth early and repeatedly in paediatric IBD care.

Keep In Mind

Retrospective cohort from two paediatric referral centres (128 patients) published in Nutrients; observational study can show associations but not prove causation. Some subgroup differences and treatment associations did not reach statistical significance.
